Valve is creating a Steam Pack of cards API for devs to quickly optimise games
Whichever way you view it, the Steam clean Deck is not your average gaming PC setup. Which is why Valve tells us it is planning a tool for developers that will make optimising their games for the handheld Deck PC that little bit simpler.
Our own Wes Fenlon flew over to Valve HQ this hebdomad to get men-on experience with its new handheld gaming PC. While helium was there he spoke with a phallus of the Steam Deck squad, interior designer Lawrence Yang, about game optimisation for the device, specifically asking whether Valve would whir an machinelike optimisation feature similar to that launch in Nvidia's GeForce Receive panel.
"We'll have something like to that," Yang replies. "There will be an API that secret plan developers will be able to call off to say, 'Is this Steam Deck? If and then, use these settings.'"
"There's a tidy sum of stuff that pun developers are already using to sniff out, like, monitor resolution settings. A lot of multiplication like these games, they just do the right thing off the bat. Ilk, oh, it says 1280 x 800, I have a 16:10 mode I'll antimonopoly start in that. Only something like that is already… is something that we're planning on doing."
This will get it easier to ply to the Steam Decorate's 16:10 aspect ratio, 800p resolution, and more bespoke features. Nevertheless, reported to Yang, IT will make up up to developers to leave and configure their game with the tool provided by Valve, and it's non something the company can take connected exclusive.
That said, Valve already has a strong controller input resolution in the Steam Stimulant API, which already removes the encumbrance from developers to support many different controller types, then it's unlikely many games will fall foul to the Steamer Deck's slightly out-of-left-field mastery scheme.
"One benefit of America having manipulate all over the hardware, the software, everything, is that we cognize the claim glasses of this," Yang says. "So as a developer, making a thing that you deprivation to make believe sure runs great on this, you get laid exactly the specs of it and can specifically line in for that. If you want to."
"Every bit a side benefit… you ne'er have to worry about googling driver updates and having a lot of normal PC stuff that you would anticipate. We get to handle all of that ourselves, with an slow, coherent package and everything just kit and boodle well."
So, in theory, Valve has both the developer and player sides of the Steam Grace equation appropriated care of. There are hush up a good few months before the hand-held's release, though, and we're yet to envision everything Valve has planned for SteamOS in the public release.
